You may have not realized that today was George Washington’s birthday, however, members of OUR George’s kindergarten class will likely not forget anytime soon. Because our George has a summer birthday, we decided to start a new tradition by bringing cupcakes and celebrating at school on the first president’s birthday. And really, it makes a lot of sense because it’s only 158 days till our George’s birthday. I mean, really…he’s practically 6 already.
His teacher read, “On The Day You Were Born,” by Debra Frasier and no lie… it made me cry it was so beautiful. She actually played a pre-recorded reading with music while turning the pages. Here’s Part 1 of the video and here’s Part 2. They’re both about 4 minutes long which I recognize is crazy long, but if you do watch it, listen to the words of the book. It was so darn sweet.
After the book, they had a group hug that ended with all of the kids in a big heap on top of George. I thought for sure there would be tears as the last one peeled himself off, but to my pleasant surprise, George was all smiles.
Then, my favorite part. The school gives you a form entitled “The Story of _____.” It’s a couple of paragraphs and it guides you through the process of highlighting fun facts about your child for every year of their life. You are also encouraged to bring photos illustrating each year. Then, Mom or Dad reads the story while the child walks around the circle and shows the photo for that year. Have I mentioned how much I love our children’s school? Because if you forgot, I’ll say it again.
Here are the photos I took. Sigh. They grow up so darn fast.
And here’s a favorite I came across while compiling the ones above…
To top it off, we had cupcakes and I designed a little topper to tie in the George theme.
Happy George Washington’s Birthday-only 158 days till your birthday-day.
I love you sweet Georgie.

Sarah Wolfe - Love this idea for a summer birthday. I need to do something like this for Graham because his is Dec 27. I need some accountability to make it happen… will you help me? 🙂
