As I type from a borrowed chair in the middle of the hall on the first floor of Prentice Women’s Hospital, our son George is just turning six hours old and sharing a meal with his mother eleven floors above. I’ll keep this short because I want to be with them – and this is the only place in the building with a strong and constant wireless signal.

To continue the story from this afternoon: around 4:15, doctors and nurses agreed that the baby was ready to come. Sally gave one full ten-count push, and George’s head emerged. After three little three-count pushes, Doctor Foley held George in his hands. George was a little grey in the hands and feet – apparently normal for newborns. Seconds later, I snipped the cord between two clamped points, and we handed George to his mother for the first time.

He’s got the right number of everything, and he’s pretty well formed. Eating and sleeping appear to be early aptitudes.

Sally is doing wonderfully. She was strong and optimistic all day, and she’s already said, “we have to do this again” while feeding her hours-old baby.

Francis met George around dinner time. The Browns (who are graciously hosting Francis while we’re here) came by with dinner. Francis spent much of her time sitting on the bed with her mommy and brother. “Baby George,” she said upon arrival. Then, stroking his blanket, she said, “Baby George, nice. Nice.”

Thanks, everyone, for checking in on us. We’re so happy to introduce you to our son.

I almost forgot. Here are George’s stats: eight pounds, fourteen ounces, and just barely under 21 inches.

Baby update

July 30, 2006
3:47 p.m.
Prentice Women’s Hospital
Chicago, IL

Sally started having contractions at 8:00 this morning. I jumped out of bed, took a quick shower, and started throwing the bags in the car. We woke up Francis (who, thankfully, decided to sleep in this morning), put her in the car, and took her over the the Brown’s. Becca gave us a little cereal, and then threw us out when Sally was grimacing at a contraction. We’re glad she did, because by the time we arrived at the hospital, Sally was in some real pain. After triage on the 4th floor, they immediately took her up to a birthing room on the 5th. She was dilated seven centimeters. We put on the brakes with an epidural, and we’ve been waiting here ever since.

At about 3:20, the doctor broke Sally’s water, resulting in a 1.5 foot geyser. It was something to see. So that’s where we stand. We expect to have a little boy within the hour. Everything looks good so far.

July 30, 2006 - 9:30 pm

Fulmer Fam - I am so happy things are going well, but believe you me that is not the last 1.5 foot geyser you will be seeing in the next few years, but they will be coming from the precious baby boy ๐Ÿ™‚

July 31, 2006 - 2:46 am

Kristen - Congratulations, Lovely Guldes!! We can't wait to see pics when you get to a better connection. Love and power naps to you all….

The Final Countdown

Well, we did it. We didn’t have a baby, but we’ve got it scheduled for Monday morning at 8am. So if I don’t pop in the next 2.5 days we’ve got a back up plan. It feels good to have an “end” in sight. I took a “stress test” today and the baby is happy and healthy. I’m slightly more dialated than last week and I’ve been feeling more contractions so who knows… I may have this baby this weekend. It would be fun to have baby G today because today is my sister Sherrie’s birthday. And tomorrow is Lola Petillo’s 1st birthday so… I’ve got my fingers crossed. It would be fun to share our special day with one of our favorite people. In the meantime, my plan is to station myself in front of our A/C and watch some HGTV. I just realized I’ve got only 2.5 more days to work this whole pregnancy thing. ๐Ÿ˜‰ “Matt, could you go get me a coke and an ice cream sandwich?”

July 29, 2006 - 2:57 am

Kristen - your plans for the final countdown make me miss you even more… i don't think anyone around here appreciates my fascination with hgtv like you would. yea for end dates! it could be just the motivation you need to get things working over the weekend. love you all!!

July 29, 2006 - 2:27 pm

July 29, 2006 - 3:21 pm

Fulmer Fam - Thomas Wayne and I are checking and we are only friends through my sis, you are very popular, just like in high school according to my sis ๐Ÿ™‚ and so is baby G.

July 29, 2006 - 6:15 pm

Sally - I've been checking it 5-6 times a day and I'm the one having the darn baby. Also, funny thing everytime the phone rings I think… Is that the baby? I'm so weird.

July 30, 2006 - 3:32 am

Drew, Amber and Megan - So, are you gonna tell us before or after G2 gets here. I mean are you gonna run to the computer real quick and say it's time! Or are you gonna suprise us all with new baby pics!?

Emergency Manicure

So I did my best to keep my mouth shut and I thought it was actually working.

Yesterday evening we went over to Amy and Steve’s house for dinner (thank you, thank you, thank you) and while we were eating I kept getting mild contractions. In an effort to keep hope alive, Amy and I walked back to my house after dinner, and the contractions continued. Then, about an hour later – in true Kmart form – they stopped. I decided to take a deep breath and a hot bath and call it a night. At about midnight I woke up with contractions that continued every four minutes till about 5:30am. I knew for sure that this was it. I got up and put my contacts in, double-checked to make sure the cameras and phones were charging, and curled my hair (I know, silly girl, but I was just positive). And then.!.!. they stopped again. Pfffft.

So in case you’re wondering a woman who is 6 days overdue can have false labor. Who knew? I didn’t.

In my dispair this morning, I called Amy for a pep talk. She is not only a midwife, but she was 2 weeks overdue with her son a year ago – so a woman like me has a real friend in Miss Amy. She knows just what to say and how to say it because she’s been there. She showed up at my house within 30 minutes and told me to get lost. It was amazing. She watched Francis for a couple of hours and told me to go eat lunch and get a manicure and that’s exactly what I did and I feel much better.

I’m scheduled to see my doctor tomorrow at 10am and I imagine we’ll talk about induction possibilities. At this point I’m still not sure if I want to do that. On one hand I’m on the edge of tears at all times because I want so badly to have this kid and on the other hand, I can’t believe I’m already a week overdue. This week actually went by pretty fast in hindsight. So maybe I can actually make it another week? I don’t know… if I keep having rollercoaster nights like last night I might just go insane.

July 27, 2006 - 9:14 pm

The Gulde Gang - Hang in there…Gulde babies refuse to come early I've decided. Why would this little guy be any different. Did you explain to him that Uncle Jeff & Aunt Denise are home now and he doesn't have to wait for us????
love, dg

July 28, 2006 - 12:24 am

Drew, Amber and Megan - Hey I was induced with Megan and it was great, I had a time to be there, they broke my water-ahhh-the feeling of peeing my pants, then 3 hours later we had Megan. It only seemed like 30 minutes though. It's the way to go.

July 28, 2006 - 3:19 am

Steve and Amy Lou - hang in there, sally, you're doing great. Whatever you decide, I'm behind you 100%. This baby WILL come, that I can guarantee!!!

July 28, 2006 - 3:22 pm

Kristen - I think all this xtry time is helpful for playing the name game. I just realized Natalie Maines, yes, that's right of Dixie Chicks fame, has a son named Beckett Finn. Two names you've always loved… And then there's Emily's Gus. Augustus Gulde. Just look at all those "u's", will ya?? So much to think about in these minutes that all lead to one of the biggest shakeups in your life. Cherish your single daughter. ๐Ÿ˜‰ I love you and wish you all — all the best!

July 28, 2006 - 3:24 pm

Kristen - i forgot to mention that those digits of yours shore look niiiice!

July 28, 2006 - 4:34 pm

ERIC WELLS - Hey girl…being a man,I have no idea what your going through, but as a friend I sure feel for ya,and so fear not my dear sally for the ole ric'ster and all your friends here in L-town are pulling for ya….good luck….by the way,the reunion is this weekend and you are already missed….Eric

July 30, 2006 - 7:47 pm

The Olson Family - Ok, David came exactly on his due date. That was 1 week too long for me! Hang in there! Can't wait to meet my new nephew! What's that about the name Augustus or Beckett? Do they know something we don't. Love you guys.
