Happy Mother’s Day to me! :)

Sally and Francis
Originally uploaded by The Gulde Family.

Today Francis and I shared our last one on one Mother’s day. With all of the anxiety and excitement around the corner with baby #2, it was a great day with my sweet Matt and my precious little Francis.

This morning I woke up to her singing “Now I know my A, B, C, now I know, now I know…” and other goodies like “My Chair!” and “Ellie’s house.” I’ve come to realize that in those minutes before we go get her from her crib she practices all of her new words and phrases regardless of context. She just likes trying them out and hearing herself say them…and they make me wake up smiling everyday.

Then as I turned over to put my glasses on, I noticed a little box by my bedside containing an antique silver locket with my two babies photos inside (Scout and Francis, of course). However, I think Scout may be outted from the locket come July. ๐Ÿ™‚ After a lazy morning, we headed out to breakfast, Oak Brook mall (where this photos was taken), and then back home for a nice long nap! After the nap, we walked to the park and then headed to a restaurant I’ve been wanting to try for a long time here in Oak Park called Cocina Paradiso. It was awesome… a day of no cooking and Matt was super dad and took on primary Francis duty. ๐Ÿ˜‰ I just got to sit back and completely enjoy the good company of my two best friends. Thanks guys. I love you.

Fulmer Fam - ok, for some reason your entry made me cry, oh yeah probably because I miss my husband, ok enough of that. So, how do you get all of the music for your clips because I cannot get the itunes to work in windows movie maker, so I need to figure out how to get music a different way I guess???

Baltimore Emergent Cohort - what a sweet day! I have been thinking about you as you prepare for Baby #2, who is so fortunate to have you and Matt as parents! Loved the "Roast Post"- you are truly a mama now! Love you guys! Hugs all around!

It’s official. I’m a grown up.

Tonight I sit on our couch with that sweet “I just ate the greatest meal ever” glow. I feel like a new person. I just finished eating some of my very first pot roast. Not just any pot roast mind you, but my momma’s pot roast with all the fixins’…with carrots, red potatoes, and the clincher…homemade gravy. I’ve seen her make this a zillion times, but never have I solely taken on the challenge of a 5lb piece of meat. And frankly, if I may be so bold, I did a damn fine job. I was inspired to buy the giant beefy lovelyness to celebrate Matt’s first trial this week, but it soon became clear to me that my timing was off. I now know that when your husband is on trial he doesn’t make it home for dinner. So it was just me and Scout tonight. And although Scout doesn’t actually speak, it was pretty clear he thought I did a good job too.

So as I sit here just two months from having my second child, I all of a sudden feel more prepared than ever. Sure there will be sleepless nights and days of chaos ahead, but I have the confidence of knowing I can make a pot roast… and freakin’ homemade gravy. I can do anything. This kid has got nothin’ on me.

katherine petillo - my, my. girl, you have come a long way. it wasn't that long ago that a good ole microwave corndog was a mighty fine dinner and look at you now. congrats. wish i was there to share in the glory. love you.

Donoghue Nation - If I were your husband and you had made a pot roast, I'd be home for dinner. I might not even remember I was in the midst of a trial, as I enjoyed the post-roast food coma.

Kidding, we at the DN are very proud of both Sally's roast and Matt's trial. This is a very grown up week for the Gulde family.

Michelle - Sally, It's Michelle Hayden from Panama — I loved this as I am struggling with surviving Baby #2 — Lea gave me your blog site and I am so happy to read about your family! I was thrilled when I first made a pot roast, too (about 2 months ago)… I'm not sure why that has such a grown up feeling except that it's a piece of cake to make with two kids…. You can check out my blog at http://www.bomberger.net — Keep in touch! BTW, what's your connection with ND? Both my hubby and I went there undergrad…

Steve and Amy Lou - Sally, you never cease to amaze me. Not only are you an EXCELLENT friend, but an amazing wife and mother. You go girl!

Google trends

Gmail is great. Google Maps had me from the beginning. Seems like I use Google News every day. Here’s a more frivolous example of Google ingenuity: Google Trends. You can graph the number of google searches over time for any search term. You can also enter multiple search terms and compare the trend lines. For example, in lost vs. found “lost” appears to be steadily outpacing a flat-lining “found” since the fall of 2004. I wonder what happened then.

It seems like there would be scale problems when you compare searches of different popularity. For example, in sex vs. chastity, “sex” appears to be blasting the scale so high that you can even see bumps in the “chastity” line. I wish there were a normalized scale that would allow us to compare the trends in each line even though the scales might be grossly disproportionate.

Sally - Didn't the show LOST appear on the scene around 2004? Maybe that's the reason Lost is on the rise? ๐Ÿ˜‰

May 12, 2006 - 2:34 am

Drew, Amber and Megan - well, we know who has the brains in this family

May 12, 2006 - 3:00 am

Fulmer Fam - Ummm, don't y'all live in the same house and uh, like share the same bed?
Open the lines of communication for the sake of the children, if for nothing else!

May 12, 2006 - 3:09 am

Matt - I'm on trial this week, so sharing the same bed is about all we've done for the last couple of weeks.

donr - I loved googling the word "content" the other night and finding 6.5 billion results. I haven't looked through all of them yet, of course, but as someone who runs marketing for a big content management software company, there's comfort in knowing there's so much content out there…

ERIC WELLS - Hey Sally I feel ya…you know me and how I am….try being married to a teacher…geez..I get corrected on everything I do….Ha….Eric

Francis’s First Date

First Date with Eoin
Originally uploaded by The Gulde Family.

A week or so ago we watched Eoin for the night while his mom and dad celebrated Becca’s Birthday. We decided to have a little date night ourselves and did so by putting together a little candlelit dinner for the little munchkins. They loved it… the cloth napkins didn’t get touched, but they were completely entertained by the candle. What a cute couple…

Drew, Amber and Megan - What's funny to me is Francis really knowing what is going on!!

Table and Chairs

Back in February, I started building Francis a table and four chairs. I’m still not finished, but as you can see, I’ve completed the construction phase of the project. The chairs could use a couple more coats of varnish, and the table hasn’t been varnished at all. Still, I’m proud of them and I wanted to share.

This photo set shows some details of the table assembly. I have no independent knowledge that this is a good way to put a table together – I basically copied a table from Francis’s daycare. I did broaden the base because the original had a tipping problem. I also added a couple inches to the height.

Special thanks to Pat Babka, who helped cut the tabletop.

ERIC WELLS - Hey Matt…Nice job man,I myself am a "Do it yourself" guy. I like that since of pride ya get when you step back and look at the final product and you can say "yep,I built that" not to mention the fact…Is it just me or does everything you decide to build yourself last 10 times longer than if you bought it somewhere…hmmmm….anyway thought you could use a pat on the back….Eric

May 3, 2006 - 2:28 pm

Justin - Very good work. (I assume it is…I'll await testing and a report by Francis.)

I'm a do-it-himself guy – and by "him" I mean whomever has established as a profession the service I need done.

Therefore, I envy you.

Steve and Amy Lou - Great job, Matt!!! When can we put our order in??? Seriously, very cool set, she will treasure that always!
