Bioluminescent Bacon

Like many people, I haven’t done a whole lot of thinking about the ethics of genetic research. I’m embarrassed to say that I can’t exactly tell you what a stem cell is. Nevertheless, I do understand that the things scientists are able to do – and the things they will be able to do very soon – implicate profound questions about whether we, as an ethical society, should be able to do, or even attempt, such things.

Today’s revelation of glow-in-the-dark pigs is a splash of cold water to my languor concerning the ethics of genetic research.

Did any of you seriously think this would happen in your lifetime? A group of Taiwanese scientists have bred bioluminescent pigs by injecting pig embryos with jellyfish DNA. I’m completely serious when I wonder how far we are from a real-life Peter Parker, whose embryo was injected with spider DNA with interesting results.

On one hand, it is mind-blowingly cool that scientists devised these glowing pigs. On the other, it is frightening to think about what we’re becoming capable of.

We were a little surprised when our brother-in-law showed up for Christmas with shoulder-length, unkempt hair. After I got used to it, I think it actually improved his looks. I wonder, though, how he gets away with this new style as VP of a multinational corporation.

The other day, I pointed out Francis’s habit of flirting at restaurants. Here is an example of her putting on a sophisticated and charming air at McDonald’s.

She seems to be saying, “I’m sorry, what did you say? I was just browsing this latest copy of the Reader. By the way, did you notice my dimple? This isn’t even my good side.”

I didn’t have the heart to tell her the paper was upside-down.

Did I mention that it was in the mid-60s the entire time we were in Oklahoma? It was, and we enjoyed it. Francis spent some time on the front porch (pictured), in the backyard, and in the park across the street. I even got to play a little golf.

It was hard to drag the girls back to our frozen home in the northland.

Donoghue Nation - What happened to the days when the blog was all about credit cards, magnets, the Dukes of Hazzard and pastries that look like people? Those were the good old days (not to be confused with the good ole boys, of course). I don't know about all of these cute pictures of Francis. Where's the powerful social commentary? ๐Ÿ˜‰

Drew, Amber and Megan - Your mom looks great, I loved seeing some of her house since I've been there

Extreme Home Makeover in the OP

I’ve been getting requests for photos of the recent work we had done on our house so I thought I’d take some photos while it was still decorated for Christmas! I’ve been dragging my feet to take it all down because it’s so pretty! Ah…well at least now I can look at the photos.

So the work… we had all of the wood trim cleaned of all paint slop. (The previous owners had painted the side of every door and window frame and the edge of every piece of ceiling molding.) So my type A personality is breathing much easier these days. I walk in and see clean lines everywhere. Ah… much better. Other major improvements were having the wall paper removed in the dining room to reveal the original oak paneling. What a huge difference that was. We also had the entire downstairs painted (minus the kitchen – another big project) and the staircase and upstairs landing. Now onto curtains, light fixtures, furniture and a kitchen remodel…! Argh!!! The paint color in the entry in these photos looks bright yellow. In actuality it’s a pale yellow, almost taupe color.

im - Hey the new work you've done looks tremendous! I can say so because I've seen it. One question: I'm not a color guy, and don't know about creativity, but I thought taupe was not even in the yellow family. Am I wrong?

Sally - You're going to have fun talking about paint color with your wife someday. Ask Matt… he loves it.

Me: "I think this blue has too much red in it, don't you Honey?"

Matt: – puzzled and exhausted –

im - I think, for now, I'd settle for the wife part of that thought.
