Daddy’s home!

Daddy’s home!

Something I love about the summertime is that the kids and I can meet Matt at the el stop or along the sidewalk when he comes home. It’s always so fun to see their faces light up when they see him. That has been especially true for George lately. I guess I forget that he’s a little person (shhh…don’t tell him I said that). But he is, and lately I’ve noticed that he gets crazy excited when he sees Matt at the end of the day. I’ll be holding him and he’ll start kicking, grunting, and reaching for him. He loves his daddy.

MOVIE: Pupcakes

Pupcakes from gulde and Vimeo.
Francis made me “pupcakes,” as she adorably refers to them, for my birthday last Tuesday. Now we get to make a cake for her birthday on Sunday and then one for George in two weeks. It’s birthday season at the Gulde house! Whoo hoo!

chacha - Happy Birthday, Gulde Crew! (Do you feel left out, Matt? At least Francis is looking out for you in the pupcake department.)

Polymath

I think it’s wonderful how so many comic book heroes are renaissance men and women. Peter Parker not only wall-crawled the boundaries of human/arachnid physical and ethical achievement, but he was also a world-class chemist and engineer who devised synthetic web formula and the device to shoot it from his wrists. Bruce Wayne is not only a business tycoon and acrobatic crime fighter, but he is also a mechanical, chemical, and computer genius.

Outside of fiction, it’s rare to find a true polymath — someone who makes significant contributions in a variety of different fields. Leonardo da Vinci was possibly the greatest non-fictional polymath, erecting pillars of accomplishment in painting, sculpture, engineering, and biology, just to name a few of his disciplines. Sadly, Leonardo had no documented super powers.

Today, I discovered that a founding member of the rock band Queen, Bryan May, is in the club (polymaths, not superheros). I don’t know enough about astrophysics to know if Bryan May’s scientific contribution is truly significant (proving “for the first time that dust clouds in the solar system are moving in the same direction as the planets”), but I believe his rock-and-roll contribution to be. Good for you, Bryan May: rocker scientist.

I have to say that rock star/astrophysicist is among the greatest possible polymath combinations. It’s quite impressive to be Bo Jackson or Deion Sanders, dominant in two different sporting endeavors (even Michael Jordan couldn’t do it). But for the same man to make strides in physics – answering some of the most interesting answerable questions – and pen songs like Fat Bottomed Girls and We Will Rock You. . .

Well, that’s a special brand of genius.

Sally - I love this. I'm so glad the parents of the world now have Bryan May to reference. "Yes Francis, you can be a rocker, but it's always good to have a PHD under your belt like Bryan May."

"Fat Bottomed Girls" and "We Will Rock You" – what a wealth of talent this man has.

Michael - dont forget Milo Aukerman…front man for the DESCENDENTS…he's everybody's favorite punk rock PHD!

Happy Birthday, Sally

During the first autumn of our relationship, Sally was startled at my obsession with Notre Dame football. The poor girl, you see, grew up in a home unaccustomed to the ritual of watching college or pro football. Then, later that year, she was surprised by my interest in watching every televised Notre Dame basketball game. Once, when I happened to be channel-surfing past a soccer game, she noticed and said, “you CANNOT TELL ME that you watch Notre Dame play soccer, too.”

As any fanatical follower of a team can tell you, losses are painful, sometimes nauseating. In that first fall with Sally, though, I noticed something different about my fanaticism. Losses stopped bothering me as much. The Irish opened 0-3 to start the year, and lost to terrible Stanford and Boston College teams. After each disturbing game, I would look at Sally and remember that life was good.

I told her, “I love you to such a degree that I don’t mind as much when Notre Dame loses.” Profound, I thought, but I don’t think she understood the depth of the statement at the time. It’s even truer now, as I am reminded by the 2007 Notre Dame Football Ticket Lottery. Once again, I’ve been shut out. I sent them a big check and asked to be considered for attendance at five of their games. They said no, no, no, no, and no. This was not a loss by Notre Dame as much as a personal loss, and yet, I still feel the warm sun on my face and know that my sweet wife is at home loving me.

Today is her birthday, and I’m going to go home now. Then we’re going to put frosting on the cupcakes that Francis made for her. And then we’re going to put the kids down and go have an adult dinner to talk about the state of Notre Dame football recruiting.

Happy birthday, Sally. I love you more than the Irish.

MOVIE: Back Breaking Work

After almost 5 weeks of permit h-e-double-hockey-sticks, we got the piece of paper allowing us to dig 9 giant holes in our yard. Saturday, Dennis, Paul and Matt flat went to town. It was a sight to see. I wish I could fully explain or convey in video, however, this is the best I can do. It was back-breaking work in crazy hot weather with no shade tree in sight. Speaking of shade trees, a couple of the holes took HOURS to dig because they kept hitting tree roots. Apparently our sad excuse for a back yard used to have a beautiful giant tree in it. We miss you tree.
The good news, the inspector came out today and gave us the thumbs up to build the deck. I would guess we’ll have a deck this time next week…hopefully.

Kristen - big beautiful tree — we miss you! i can't wait to see pictures of that kitchen in progress! good luck with the deck!

July 10, 2007 - 1:42 am

Thomas Petillo - i feel for those guys. really. katherine and i had been married a bit over a year when i decided i would build a fence at our first house. i had the one man version of that contraption, and it beat my hips black and blue. i swore i would never again dig post holes. and i've kept my word.

July 10, 2007 - 3:11 am

Sally - Then you know… this video doesn't capture the anguish. It was hard damn work. And I'm not kidding, they thought it would take 3 hours and it took 10. It was hard to watch.

Matt's hands are a blistered mess of good intention.

July 10, 2007 - 12:52 pm

donr - Meanwhile, HAPPY HAPPY BIRTHDAY from the Roedner Ranch, sweet Sally Cat. You're my favorite Cancer ever…

July 11, 2007 - 7:33 pm

chacha - Holy crap! I knew Dennis was an angel before, but this video proves that his place in heaven is assured. Even I would have called in sick before digging posts this past Saturday….yet Dennis knew he couldn't keep sweet Sally Gulde waiting one more second for her new deck.
