Still having all kinds of fun here at the Gulde Ranch. I just dropped off Francis at school. It will be nice to move around town with only George and Rosa today. As you can see though, they are awful cute all together.
Kristen and RJ showed up on Saturday afternoon and we haven’t stopped smiling yet. It has been so great to talk face to face with Kristen and especially delicious to snuggle up with Miss Rosa Jane. What a precious and adorable little bundle she is. She is all smiles and giggles. Based on our photo you may be getting a bit nauseous at the sight of yet another zoo photo. You may be thinking… can’t the Guldes think of something ELSE to do. Well, let me clarify that this time I’m not to blame. I just found out that Kristen’s niece works at the Dolphin pavillion there (and her boyfriend trains the dolphins at Shedd Aquarium). In any case, I’m not to blame for taking us to the zoo, but as you might have guessed, Kristen has now sealed her role as favorite Auntie. She not only took Francis to the zoo, but is related to someone who WORKS there. All you auntie’s out there… beware… Kristen’s really pulling all the stops. ๐

hey sally! no i dont get those discont coupons from JoAnn but please do forward them my way if you think of it I make trips over there all the time for stuff, hope yall are doing great, talk to ya soon! I remember riding in the molded plastic seat attached to the back of my dadโs ten-speed when I was a toddler. Those are some of my earliest memories. One might expect those memories to include feeling the wind in my hair โ especially in a time before widespread helmet use for children. Maybe youโd expect me to recall the warmth of a quick backwards glance from my dad, or the exhilaration of leaning into a turn with him โ two riders working as one aerodynamic force. I donโt remember any of that. The only thing I remember is fear. Blinding, heart-racing, white-knuckled fear. That was on my mind when I set Francis atop a pony for her first horse ride. Once she discerned my intention, she fought it. She clung to my neck and kicked her legs as I set her on the saddle. “No daddy! I don’t want it!” I wonder if I resisted the bike seat like this. I might have let her get off the horse if not for the following: immediately (two seconds, maximum) after I set her in the saddle, she said, through her tears, “I like him,” patting the horse’s mane. So we didn’t abort our horse-mission. She and I circled the parking lot arm-in-arm with a brown pony. She even held the saddle horn with one hand.

I laughed, I cried, it had all the elements, a 10. Last weekend we were taking a walk in our neighborhood and came across this amazing performance-art theatre group called Redmoon putting on a show in our neighborhood park. Well, I say it’s our “neighborhood park,” but it’s huge. Columbus park is a Chicago parks district gem designed by Jens Jensen that features a picturesque lagoon, some classic Chicago architecture, and a nine-hole golf course. What we happened upon was Redmoon’s annual spectacle event. It was truly outstanding. At twilight, they transformed the park with all kinds of performers and scenes. They weren’t jugglers and stilt walkers, but actors playing out surreal vignettes. In one corner there was a woman dressed up as a swan in a giant nest. She would sleep in her nest for a few minutes and then awake and move and sway to the sounds of a deep cello. Around the pathway, there was a guy dressed as a bird reading books on his perch, whistling like a bird, and operating a complex pulley system to open and close book covers. There was a “sea creature” rowing oars from a clawfoot tub, a victorian courtship balcony scene where each of the characters were covered in mirrors, a giant fish that lit up and roamed around the park, a chess match between goth clowns who constantly switched sides – and so so much more. Everything was so elaborate and beautiful: concept, lighting, color, music, wardrobe. I wish I were a better writer, able to paint a picture that captured the scene. It made me feel so alive and reminded me that, aside from being a momma, I’m an artist as well. It’s been a long time since I’ve fed that part of myself. Matt and I both share a love for these things. I think the performance aspects resonate for him and the colors and costuming excite me. It was such a fun night and such an unexpected thing to bump into just two blocks from our house. Francis loved it too. This is why I love living here. Nevermind that it snowed yesterday. What a neat thing to have stumbled upon! Sorry to hear that it snowed on you yesterday. It rained here so Rosa Jane & I headed out to splish splash in the driveway. We can't wait to come see you next week. Do you think we'll catch any fall colors?

I've always wanted to see a Redmoon performance! Thats soooo cool. My friend Ryan was trying to get signed on as a puppet maker for the group but it didn't work out. Now I have to see one after looking through your pictures. I think their season is closing soon though with winter approaching, I think they have to always perform outside or something….anyways, take care! love you guys! |
