Circus Contraption

In the summer before I began law school, I spent three months in a beautiful place: Glacier National Park. Part of my employment at Many Glacier Hotel involved singing (and, alas, dancing) in a show every night of the summer for the entertainment (bewilderment?) of the hotel guests.

A highlight of that time was making friends with drama-types from all over the country. I had never been in school plays beyond sixth grade, so I had been insulated from that peculiar breed of human. I didn’t even know you weren’t supposed to say “Macbeth” among them, but they had patience with me.

In keeping up with several of these people, I’m amazed at how many of them are still acting or involved in the performing arts. I may well be the only 1997 summer cast member who is not currently performing.

This is all by way of introduction to Circus Contraption, a wonderful circus arts/burlesque/freak show based in Seattle. One of those 1997 Glacier NP people is involved, and has me on the Circus Contraption mailing list. They recently got some good press on MSNBC.COM. They’re based in Seattle, but are coming off of a set of fall performances in NYC. If you’re in Seattle, check them out.

Sally and I saw them four years ago in Chicago, and they were fantastic. That was two kids ago, and a lot has probably changed since then – so we need to see them again soon. The whole show was memorable, but the closing especially stands out in my mind. The entire cast performed The Entertainer as a “bottle choir” – like a bell choir but with bottles filled to various heights to produce different notes when blown. It was one of the less technical bits of the show, but I thought it captured the experience of the evening: that of being among the inner works of some wonderfully twisted and magnificent pipe organ.

Donoghue Nation - I assure you, you have not stopped performing. People may not buy tickets or arrive at scheduled times for your shows and your payment may only be in laughs and smiles, but you definitely continue performing.

A Day In The Life of Gulde

I needed a way to carry George and laundry upstairs… I think he liked it. I love this boy. He’s killn’ me with his smiles these days. He’s growing up so fast.

Fulmer Fam - I love the mulitple personality pictures of Francis. Hmmm, how many different things can I be at once, cowgirl, cheerleader, and one of the three amigos! Amber says and a waitress at taco bueno!

After a weekend without Matt (He was fly fishing with one of his best friends in Pennsylvania – bachelor party), I loaded up the kids on Sunday afternoon and headed for the hills. I needed to get out of the house and Francis needed to run off some energy. So we met up with some of our favorite people: Ryan, Becca and Eoin Brown. It was great. Full of cider, carmel corn, and wagon rides. Check out the full set of pics on Flickr. There are some crazy adorable pics of Francis and George together.

Danny Boy

Francis has a bedtime ritual: take a bath, brush the teeth, read a book, sing a song, go to bed. It’s the same every night. A former glee clubber*, I take great pride in the variety of songs that France gets every night. She gets the children’s classics and stand-bys, but she also gets a number of NDGC favorites such as Loch Lomond, the Victory March, the ND Alma Mater, Shenandoah, and Francis’s favorite: Danny Boy. We didn’t actually know that Francis liked Danny Boy until this weekend. In fact, I wasn’t even sure she had been listening. It seemed quite possible that she was just sitting in my lap coming up with schemes to avoid bedtime. As she and Sally drove to the park on Saturday, however, Francis started singing Danny Boy in the backseat.

Every day, we’re astounded by how much Francis is understanding and retaining. Just the other day, she was looking at pictures with her teacher, Roxanne. Francis came across the picture of a baby Roxanne used to watch. “Ethan!” Francis said, correctly identifying the kid that she hadn’t seen in four months.

George is way behind. He can’t even talk yet. The only thing he remembers is where the milk comes from.

* I must admit, with some reservation, that one is never really a “former” glee clubber.

The Gulde Gang - Your Glee Club days come up frequently when we attend Tascosa choir events…last night's fall concert was no exception. Apparently Mr. Talley deems your singing career his success story & he tells it often. How you had never really sung and not only did you grab hold…you were successful and took that talent with you to ND. Yeah, he loves you still. So do we! dg
